May 8, 2013 Seven Wonders of Ancient Rome
Today in class we finished up our video on the Seven Wonders of Ancient Rome. You all should have handed in your notes on each of the "wonders" (except 2nd hour I"ll get yours tomorrow!).
We learned that while ancient Roman society was in many ways very similar to ours, they were also.......very strange!!!! Take for example what they called entertainment, watching people kill each other....not my cup of tea.
Your homework for tomorrow is to complete a KWL chart for ancient Rome. You won't be able to complete the L column yet since that is what you learned (completed at the end of the unit), but you should fill in the K column (what you already KNOW) and the W column (what you WANT to know).
Don't forget the Olympics have been moved to next Wednesday the 15th because of tomorrow's weather forecast.

April 2, 2013 Peloponnesian War
Welcome back! The long weekend was nice, but now it's back to business. We reviewed what we discussed last week about the Battle of Marathon, and then we moved onto the Peloponnesian War. This war was fought between Sparta and Athens and their respective allies. Remember allies refers to a partnership, not people who have been conquered. In the end because of plague and a blockade set up by Sparta, the Spartans were victorious and Athens surrendered in 404 b.c..

Mar 25, 2013 Sparta vs Athens
Homework: Answer the following question: How are Sparta and Athens similar to and different than our society today?
Today in class we reviewed the many differences between Sparta and Athens. We compiled a two column chart in our notebooks that listed all of the differences discussed in class.
We focused on what the two different societies expected of their citizens. Sparta expected their citizens to be the best soldiers they could possibly be and to give their life to the city. In Athens, they expected people to focus on education, new ideas, and the arts.
Homework for tomorrow is to answer the following question....

Today in class we had current events. Students presented their articles and we followed it up with CNN student news. We had some awesome articles! A few people presented about a champion break dancing six year old! A few others presented on an article about Japan creating a new form of energy using methane molecules trapped in ice and mud in the ocean. Very interesting!
Next week we will continue to work on the differences and conflicts between Athens and Sparta!

March 21, 2013 Sparta vs Athens
Today in class we began looking at the differences between Athens and Sparta. The list is a long one! We watched a couple of funny videos from Horrible Histories that highlighted the differences in an amusing way, see below!
As discussed Spartans were completely militaristic and focused on being the best warriors they could possibly be, while the Athenians were much more interested in thought, the arts, creativity, etc. The major differences likely spurred the continuous conflict between the two societies. Next week we will continue looking at the two groups and will discuss their conflict further.
DON'T FORGET!!!! Some of you have current events tomorrow! I need your completed template and presentation (if you have one) by tonight! Share it with me via google docs.

March 20, 2013 Democracy in Ancient Greece
Today we went over our Democracy Worksheets (1st hour we will go over this tomorrow). After reviewing the worksheet, we reviewed democracy in Ancient Athens versus the United States using our Greece power point.
Then the fun started! We did a democracy simulation where I gave cards out only to the boys which stated their position in society. Only certain members could vote, and NONE of the girls could vote. Of course, I didn't tell them we were doing a simulation and just a posed a question and responded to suggestions based on how they would be reacted to in Ancient Athens. Some of the boys were not happy, and the girls were DEFINITELY not happy! But it was a great reality check about what things were really like back then.
Tomorrow we will begin discussing the difference between Sparta and Athens.

Happy Monday! Daylight savings time is killing some of us....
Since we had the basketball game on Friday we moved Current Events to today. We had a couple of really interesting articles! Mothers in the Nordic countries leave their babies in carriages to sleep.....outside in below freezing weather! Apparently the babies are fine and parents there believe it keeps them healthier and helps them sleep longer. Not something I would like to try!
We watched CNN student news and some highlights from the awesome basketball game this weekend!
Tomorrow we will continue learning about Ancient Greece.

Middle of the week already! Today we continued with our study of Ancient Greece. We discussed what Greek's ate, grew, and more about their daily lives. It was so interesting to see how different, yet similar, our cultures are! Many of you were cringing in your seats when discussing that they ate a lot of octopus and squid.....
Tomorrow we will continue our discussions of life in Ancient Greece and will look at Greek mythology.
Don't forget to turn in your test re-do's if you would like questions re-graded!

Feb 26, 2013 Map of Greece
We continued with Greece today. To start class off we went over the question from last night's homework. Some of you came up with some great inferences about life in Greece! When we answer these critical thinking questions make sure you are making inferences and trying to come up with new ideas outside of what we reviewed in class. Good job everyone!
We then looked over the map of Greece that was in the presentation yesterday and students were given a blank map of Greece. In partners everyone worked on getting their map filled in and labeled and began answering the questions on the back. We will continue to work on this tomorrow, so don't forget to bring your worksheet to class!

Homework: Answer Ancient Greece geography critical thinking question
Happy Monday after the unexpected long weekend! Today we moved on to our next unit which is....drumroll......ANCIENT GREECE!
So today we created a KWL chart for Ancient Greece (what we know, what we want to know, and what we have learned). Obviously we can only fill out the K and the W columns for now. Turns out you are all very interested in how the ancient Greeks made their houses and buildings....who knew. We introduced Greece today by looking at the landscape of Ancient Greece and its geography. We compared it to the units we've looked at so far and went through the similarities and differences.
Homework for tonight is to answer the following critical thinking question......
How did the geography of Greece affect the way in which people lived?

Feb 19, 2013 Taboo!
Welcome back from your long weekend! Today in class we started reviewing for the Ancient Egypt test on Thursday. Egypt is a big unit so don't wait until the night before to start studying!
Today in class we played a vocab review game based on the game Taboo. Students were paired up and were given a vocab word to describe, along with a list of words that they could not use to describe it (Ex: Word is Nile River, you cannot say River, Egypt, Life, flood). This forced everyone to have to really think of many different ways to describe the vocabulary word, thus reinforcing the concepts!
Tomorrow everyone will have the class period to work on completing the study guide for the test on Thursday. Tomorrow I will put up a copy of the blank study guide and a study guide with the answers to help you study along with quizlet flashcards.

Feb 7, 2013 Inside the Great Pyramid
Today we finished up our National Geographic video on the Great Pyramid. This was, in my opinion, the best video we've watched all year. The tour inside the pyramid was awesome and they were unveiling new discoveries for the first time on camera! It was super interesting and informative. Rock on National Geographic!

Feb 6, 2013 The Great Pyramid of Giza
Today in class we went over our visual notes. They were done really well! Here are a few examples.....
Awesome job! Students paired up with a partner (someone they had never worked with before, THE HORROR!) and used their visual notes to review everything we had taken notes on yesterday.
After this we watched an awesome National Geographic special about the Great Pyramid in Giza. The really cool thing about this video was that they take you directly inside the pyramid, through the tunnels, up to the pharaoh's chamber, and they are opening up a never before seen sarcophagus! Exciting stuff....we will finish this up tomorrow and discuss how pyramids are engineered and built.

Feb 5, 2013 Egyptian Religion Notes
Homework: Written and visual notes on Egyptian Religion
Today in class students took notes on Egyptian Religion. They worked with partners to take Cornell notes on the remaining pages in the chapter (84, 86, and 87). Once notes were completed they needed to be checked and approved by me, and then students need to create visual notes!
If you did not finish the notes in class or if you need to check your notes to make sure you have everything, here are the completed notes.
As we discussed in class, after taking visual notes for the section about the Nile River, everyone did fantastic on the quiz! So that's why we are creating them again! Remember your visual notes are based on your written notes so don't just automatically start drawing the Nile River!
Your completed written notes and visual notes are due tomorrow so get to work!

Feb 1, 2013 Current Events
Sorry about the lack of posting! It has been awhile, but to catch up this week has been all messed up! With the two hour delay and school being canceled, and student led conferences.....yikes! To sum it up....this week we worked on our student led conference presentations, reviewed what we had learned about pharaohs and mummification and then watched a National Geographic video that nicely tied the two together and gave us some more really interesting information about the two subjects!
Today we had current events. We had some really cool student articles shared and then we watched CNN Student News (below). We learned that February is Black History Month and Heart Health Month (wear red!) And of course we also discussed....the Superbowl! Who's going to win the 49ers or the Ravens??
There is no homework, have a great weekend!

Jan 23, 2013 Practicing for Student Led Conferences
We started class off with some strange news today. A man went fishing in Lake Michigan looking for perch and ended up catching a goldfish! Weirder than that....the goldfish weighed 3 lbs and was 15 inches long! Do you think it tasted like the crackers?
Starting next week we will have our student led conferences, so today in class we worked on getting prepared by practicing the steps of mummification. You all have shared with you two copies of the rubric, one with the steps filled in, and another with blanks. Use the rubric with the blanks to practice listing the steps, and check your answers with the completed rubric.
We will continue practicing this tomorrow.

Today in class we continued taking notes on the leaders of Egypt. Today we discussed further the different dynasties and time periods of rule that marked Egypt's history. We discussed the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. The important thing to remember about these is that they represent time periods NOT places. The notes from today can be found here.
Tomorrow we will finish taking notes on this section and will discuss what we will be working on to learn more about the pharaohs.
Something we will work on this week will be practicing discussing the process of creating a mummy in detail since you will need to do this for your student led conferences. So you might want to look over your mummification webquest sheets to brush up on the process!

Jan 18, 2013 Current Events
Today in class we had current events. Students presented their articles and we then watched CNN Student News. Popular topics included the Lance Armstrong interview, a vanishing lake in Ireland, and the fan favorite a prank played on drive-thru restaurants. The video of the prank can be found here and I must admit is was pretty hilarious.
CNN news focused pretty heavily on the upcoming presidential inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr. day. However, many of you didn't know the majority of the presidents featured, time to brush up!
On Monday we will continue learning about the leaders of Ancient Egypt.

Jan 11, 2013 Current Events
Happy Friday! Today we had current events. Students presented a lot of REALLY interesting articles! One was about possible refreezing the polar ice caps to help counteract the effects of global warming. Another showed pictures of animals that are masters of camouflage, and we had a number of articles that covered the flu.
Following this we watched CNN Student News which had a fascinating story on brain injuries and the effects of concussions and repeated blows to the head. Really interesting stuff!
Finally, I let students know that they would have the opportunity to make up points on their Mesopotamia Unit Test. During class students can work on correcting any answers that they got wrong. If they turn it back in and they have the right answer, I will give them back half credit (ex: if the problem is worth 2 points and they correct it with the right answer, I will give them 1 point back)
We will continue to work on the mummification webquest which will be due Tuesday. Have a good weekend!

Jan 10, 2013 Mummification Webquest
Today in class we continued our mummification webquest! Students used computers to work on completing their worksheets. Even though everyone worked VERY diligently today, it seems to be taking a little longer than expected so I want to give everyone an extra work day. The webquest will be due Tuesday and I will give you time on Monday in class to work on this.
Tomorrow we will have current events, so make sure to check the calendar below to check when your date is! If you are presenting tomorrow make sure to share your template with me tonight.
Have a great night!

We began class by watching a short video on why the Egyptians mummified people. While watching videos students the questions,
- Were the Egyptians obsessed with death?
- Why did they think they could achieve immortality
- What went into Egyptian tombs?
Following the video students began working on a webquest, where they will discover the process of making a mummy. This Mummy Webquest worksheet will need to be filled out with complete sentences, and contains the link to the website students can use to find the answers to the questions. We will work on this tomorrow in class, and then the final product will be due Monday.

Jan 8, 2013 Geography of the Nile Notes
Homework: Complete notes on section 1 from textbook and create visual notes to represent the written ones (Ex: the picture notes we took on the Nile before break)
Happy Tuesday! Today we continued our notes from section one in the textbook called Geography of the Nile. Those were the notes we took together on Monday and then today students finished up taking notes on the section on their own. Once your written notes were completed, students needed to create visual notes (like the notes we took on the Nile before break). They should take a page in your notebook and should explain everything you took in notes using pictures. Taking notes in both of these ways will help you remember all of the information!
Tomorrow we will go over the visual notes you created and then we will begin discussing mummies!

Jan 3, 2013 Egypt Video
Today in class we watched a couple of videos about Egypt. They covered an overall introduction to Egypt, as well as the Nile (what it was used for, what resources it provided, etc). Students were to take notes on the video and write down things they learned, questions they still had, and connections they made.
Tomorrow in class we will have current events, so if it is your day don't forget to share your template and presentation with me! Have a good night!

Jan 2, 2013 Welcome back!
We started off the new year with a bang! Well kind of.....we spent a little time today sharing what we did over break, because how can you not, but then we got right back to Egypt!
Students were broken up into groups where they needed to write down EVERYTHING they could possible remember about what we learned about Ancient Egypt before break. It was definitely harder than it sounds! Before break was a million years ago! I am happy to say though that I received long lists of facts from all of the groups! I will tally up the correct facts from each group tonight and see who had the most!
Don't forget since it's Wednesday already that Current Events on Friday will come up quick! Make sure to check the calendar to see when you are signed up to present.
Tomorrow we will continue to learn about the geography of Egypt.
