We started class off with some strange news today. A man went fishing in Lake Michigan looking for perch and ended up catching a goldfish! Weirder than that....the goldfish weighed 3 lbs and was 15 inches long! Do you think it tasted like the crackers?
Starting next week we will have our student led conferences, so today in class we worked on getting prepared by practicing the steps of mummification. You all have shared with you two copies of the rubric, one with the steps filled in, and another with blanks. Use the rubric with the blanks to practice listing the steps, and check your answers with the completed rubric.
We finished our notes today about Egyptian pharaohs. Notes are attached here. We learned some interesting facts about Hatshepsut, Thutmose, and Cleopatra....
Tomorrow in class we will practice explaining the process of turning someone into a mummy. You will all need to do this during your student led conferences, so make sure to look over your webquests and the website where you learned about the process of mummification.
Today in class we continued taking notes on the leaders of Egypt. Today we discussed further the different dynasties and time periods of rule that marked Egypt's history. We discussed the Old, Middle, and New Kingdoms. The important thing to remember about these is that they represent time periods NOT places. The notes from today can be found here.
Tomorrow we will finish taking notes on this section and will discuss what we will be working on to learn more about the pharaohs.
Something we will work on this week will be practicing discussing the process of creating a mummy in detail since you will need to do this for your student led conferences. So you might want to look over your mummification webquest sheets to brush up on the process!
Today in class we had current events. Students presented their articles and we then watched CNN Student News. Popular topics included the Lance Armstrong interview, a vanishing lake in Ireland, and the fan favorite a prank played on drive-thru restaurants. The video of the prank can be found here and I must admit is was pretty hilarious.
CNN news focused pretty heavily on the upcoming presidential inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr. day. However, many of you didn't know the majority of the presidents featured, time to brush up!
On Monday we will continue learning about the leaders of Ancient Egypt.
Homework: Current Events (for some), picture vocab sheets, summary of Cornell notes
Today in class we began talking about the rulers of Ancient Egypt, also known as pharaohs. We took notes from our textbook Cornell style. The pharaoh notes are attached here.
For homework, you need to create a picture vocab sheet with the four terms below
Pharaoh: The title of the kings of Ancient Egypt
Dynasty: A series of rulers from the same family or ethnic group
Absolute power: Complete control over the people
Regent: Someone who rules for a child until the child is old enough to rule
You also need to write a summary of the notes we took at the bottom of the page.
Tomorrow we will have current events and CNN Student News.
Today was a quiet day in Social Studies class, we took a quiz on the geography of the Nile River and the process involved in making a mummy. Your grades are posted in skyward so be sure to check them out.
Tomorrow we will begin talking about the leaders and rulers of Egypt.
Happy Friday! Today we had current events. Students presented a lot of REALLY interesting articles! One was about possible refreezing the polar ice caps to help counteract the effects of global warming. Another showed pictures of animals that are masters of camouflage, and we had a number of articles that covered the flu.
Following this we watched CNN Student News which had a fascinating story on brain injuries and the effects of concussions and repeated blows to the head. Really interesting stuff!
Finally, I let students know that they would have the opportunity to make up points on their Mesopotamia Unit Test. During class students can work on correcting any answers that they got wrong. If they turn it back in and they have the right answer, I will give them back half credit (ex: if the problem is worth 2 points and they correct it with the right answer, I will give them 1 point back)
We will continue to work on the mummification webquest which will be due Tuesday. Have a good weekend!
Today in class we continued our mummification webquest! Students used computers to work on completing their worksheets. Even though everyone worked VERY diligently today, it seems to be taking a little longer than expected so I want to give everyone an extra work day. The webquest will be due Tuesday and I will give you time on Monday in class to work on this.
Tomorrow we will have current events, so make sure to check the calendar below to check when your date is! If you are presenting tomorrow make sure to share your template with me tonight.
Today we began discussing mummies! We talked about why Egyptians mummified their dead, and then began our webquest to discover how they mummified their dead.
We began class by watching a short video on why the Egyptians mummified people. While watching videos students the questions,
Were the Egyptians obsessed with death?
Why did they think they could achieve immortality
What went into Egyptian tombs?
Following the video students began working on a webquest, where they will discover the process of making a mummy. This Mummy Webquest worksheet will need to be filled out with complete sentences, and contains the link to the website students can use to find the answers to the questions. We will work on this tomorrow in class, and then the final product will be due Monday.
Homework: Complete notes on section 1 from textbook and create visual notes to represent the written ones (Ex: the picture notes we took on the Nile before break)
Happy Tuesday! Today we continued our notes from section one in the textbook called Geography of the Nile. Those were the notes we took together on Monday and then today students finished up taking notes on the section on their own. Once your written notes were completed, students needed to create visual notes (like the notes we took on the Nile before break). They should take a page in your notebook and should explain everything you took in notes using pictures. Taking notes in both of these ways will help you remember all of the information!
Tomorrow we will go over the visual notes you created and then we will begin discussing mummies!
Today in class we watched a couple of videos about Egypt. They covered an overall introduction to Egypt, as well as the Nile (what it was used for, what resources it provided, etc). Students were to take notes on the video and write down things they learned, questions they still had, and connections they made.
Tomorrow in class we will have current events, so if it is your day don't forget to share your template and presentation with me! Have a good night!
We started off the new year with a bang! Well kind of.....we spent a little time today sharing what we did over break, because how can you not, but then we got right back to Egypt!
Students were broken up into groups where they needed to write down EVERYTHING they could possible remember about what we learned about Ancient Egypt before break. It was definitely harder than it sounds! Before break was a million years ago! I am happy to say though that I received long lists of facts from all of the groups! I will tally up the correct facts from each group tonight and see who had the most!
Don't forget since it's Wednesday already that Current Events on Friday will come up quick! Make sure to check the calendar to see when you are signed up to present.
Tomorrow we will continue to learn about the geography of Egypt.
